Microsoft demos NFC-based tap-to-share for Windows 8 devices (updated)

Add a comment
There’s not a ton of details on this just yet, but Microsoft confirmed during its Build keynote today that Windows 8 devices equipped with an NFC chip will be able to use a tap-to-share feature to either send content from one device to another, or simply receive content from something like an NFC-equipped card.

Update: NXP Semiconductors has now confirmed that it “worked closely” with Microsoft to develop an NFC driver for Windows 8, and that it’s also supplied the NFC solution used in the Windows 8 tablets given out at Build. According to the company, the NFC support in Windows 8 includes things like device pairing (simply tapping to pair a Bluetooth headset, for example), data sharing, and the ability to transfer control from one device to another (such as during a video call). And that’s all to say nothing of the usual fare like interacting with an NFC-enhanced advertisement, not to mention other applications that will surely follow once it’s actually put into practice. The company’s press release is after the break.

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lopez Totally Went on a Date, Source Claims

Add a comment

Business dinner, schmisness dinner. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lopez totally went on a date last week, an insider claims.

The stars were spotted at New York eatery Per Se a few days ago and, despite claims by the actor’s rep that they were simply collaborating on a “project,” a source tells Us Weekly the evening was absolutely a lot more than that.

Cooper “has been after her for ages, calling her for a while,” this anonymous person says.

The New York Post, meanwhile, reports that Lopez “turned up in a white bandage dress looking ridiculously hot” for the occasion, and that she and the Hangover star were “heavily flirting” as they dined.

J. Lo’s ex has been out on the town himself these days. He turned up at the Miami Dolphins game with supposed enemy Will Smith last night.

Intel shows off Medfield-based Android tablet at IDF 2011, we (briefly) go eyes-on (updated)

Much in the same vein as the smartphone showed off this morning, Intel also teased a Medfield-based Android tablet. But unlike the prototype Andy Rubin whisked with him off stage, we were able to at least get up close and personal with its Intel inside sibling. Unfortunately we weren’t able to actually touch it, but here’s to hoping we can track one down and do a proper hands-on at some point today.

Update: Our eagle-eyed friends at CarryPad have spotted an NFC marking on the tablet’s back.

Apple wants to press pause on patent suits, calls Motorola a lame duck

Add a comment

In what could turn out to be a very expensive lesson in minding one’s mouth, Apple plans to use Google’s and Motorola’s own words against them in court. Over the weekend, Cupertino’s lawyers filed two motions to stay in patent-related litigation with Moto, claiming the OEM’s pending merger renders its patent suits indefensible. According to Apple’s legal team, the proposed Motorola Mobility acquisition effectively transfers patent control over to Google, an allegation that public-facing statements from both companies seem to corroborate. Citing the potential waste of resources and probable reversal of future pre-merger settlements, the house that Jobs built is hoping to hold off on the court room fisticuffs until after the GoogMo consolidation is settled. With both cases set for far-off trial dates in April and August of 2012, it looks like all parties involved have plenty of time to sort this mess out, and then battle it out once again.

Chumby NeTV unfurls its web-connected tentacles for the FCC

Add a comment

FCC appearances are usually a good indication of a product’s imminent arrival. And with Chumby’s NeTV already headed to developers’ hands later this month, this Commission filing isn’t exactly catching us off guard. Now, a firm retail date is all that’s missing to complete the once huggable platform’s official outing. Those unfamiliar with the Flash-based, WiFi-enabled device can look forward to a webified HDTV experience that’ll stream online content, as well as texts and photos from your Android phone, to a flat panel display. Sure, there are plenty of other options to bring the net to your livingroom, but how many of them can claim an octopus as their mascot? Check out the source link below if emissions testing and user manuals tickle your fancy.

Angelbird’s PCIe-based SSD: it’s real, it’s shipping, it’s 800MB/s

Add a comment

Remember that 1GB/s PCIe SSD system from Angelbird we covered a year ago? Well, the company just let us know it’s finally available. The performance claims are more modest than we saw in the beta phase, but we’re not distraught: the new benchmark is 800MB/s reads and 750MB/s writes, achieved with a $3000 setup including four 240GB SSD modules mounted on a Wings PCI-e card with a 32GB SSD built-in. Need to hold something back for groceries? You can’t reduce the number of SSDs without slowing everything down, but four 60GB drives on the cheapest Wings Lite PCIe card ought to satisfy most thrill seekers for just under a grand. We hope Smart Modular is paying attention.
